Let’s Talk HVAC Filters

HVAC air filters help keep the air in your home dust- and allergen-free and keep your heating and cooling system running efficiently. But how do you decide which filter is best? That depends on you – and your system.

First, you’ll want to choose a filter that fits. Choosing the wrong size can have a dramatic impact on how effective the filter is. To find the right size, you can either check the label on your unit or simply use the measurements on the outer frame of your existing filter. There will be three numbers indicating length, width and depth. Once you find the right fit for your system, you can find the right fit for you and your family.

Air filters are categorized using a Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value – or MERV. These values range from 1-16. The higher the number, the more unwanted airborne particles are filtered out. Basic, flat filters only control contaminants like dust and pet dander. But, filters with higher numbers are pleated, which gives them more surface area per square inch. This makes them more effective against smoke, bacteria and even odors.

It’s important to note that a higher number filter isn’t always better. Filters higher than 13 could negatively affect some HVAC systems, so make sure your unit can handle them by checking your owner’s manual that came with your HVAC equipment.

Once you’ve chosen the filter that’s right for you, it’s important to change it regularly. Filters become clogged, and a clogged filter not only reduces filtration efficiency, it also restricts airflow. Ant that can put unnecessary strain on your system. Although some filters can last up to three months, it’s probably a good idea to check it monthly. If the filter is dirty, change it. To ensure you always have a filter on-hand, it may be helpful to buy in bulk or value packs.
