Surge Suppression Plan
Plug into better protection against power surges
Any number of events could cause a power surge – lightning, a car hitting a utility pole or even a squirrel getting into electric equipment. While there’s no way to prevent a surge from happening, our meter socket surge arrester (MSA) program is designed to protect your home from them.
Installed behind the electric meter, our MSA device acts as the first line of defense against electrical surges entering through the service entrance. Once installed, the device protects the large appliances within the home, such as your refrigerator, oven, washer and dryer, central heating and air conditioning equipment and sump pump.
The MSA device is leased for a monthly fee.*
*The basic Surge Suppression Plan contract is for one year, and will automatically renew each year unless the customer provides written notice requesting cancellation to First Energy at least seven days prior to the end of the annual term.
The customer is not required to purchase the good or service from FirstEnergy or the FirstEnergy operating company and the good or service may be obtained from other suppliers. A customer's decision to receive or not receive the good or service from FirstEnergy or the FirstEnergy operating company will not influence the delivery of competitive or non-competitive retail electric service to that customer by FirstEnergy or the FirstEnergy operating company. For Ohio customers, the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio does not regulate this optional service and has no authority to investigate complaints about this optional service.
